Pair Of Tropical Systems Threaten To Become Next Named Storm Of Hurricane Season

Forecasters are monitoring a pair of systems in the tropics that could develop into named storms.

One system, called Invest 94L, is now in the Central Atlantic, and expected to pass near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Friday, Oct. 18, and then move toward the Turks and Caicos or the Dominican Republic this weekend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

There's a chance it could strengthen as it enters warmer waters.

"It is possible the rainstorm goes on to become the next depression and named storm of the 2024 Atlantic season," AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva said.

Nadine and Oscar are the next names on the list for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on Saturday, Nov. 30.

The other system is now over the southwestern Caribbean. It's expected to slowly move north-northwest in the coming days and "could bring locally heavy rain to parts of Central America late this week into the weekend," the hurricane center said.
